Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Where is the Lake Hood Fence Removal project located?

The fence runs along the edge of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) property from West Northern Lights Boulevard north of Lake Hood to the end of West 44th Avenue.

  • Why is the fence being taken down?

The fence is also redundant and not needed since there is another fence that encloses airport property. The ANC does not have the funding to maintain or replace the fence. Without regular maintenance and repairs, the fence poses a safety hazard.

  • Why is the fence not being replaced?

There is a wildlife control fence already installed around the airport, which makes this fence nonessential. The cost for repairs to and/or replacement of the existing fence is expensive and beyond the ANC budget.

  • When will the fence be taken down?

Fence removal is planned for November 2026.

  • What are the residents who rely on the fence supposed to do? Why is the removal scheduled for winter rather than at a time when a replacement fence can be installed?

The fence removal is schedule for 2026/2027 winter construction as the airport's access to the fence is largely through wetlands. This provides residents time to construct their own fence in Summer 2026 prior to the removal of the airport's fence, if they wish.

  • Is it possible to opt out of the removal project by signing into the agreement with ANC, so the owner/I will take the full responsibility of maintenance of the fence?

Opting out of the fence removal is not something the Airport can authorize. Because the fence was originally funded with airport resources, it cannot be retained or transferred for the benefit of adjacent property owners. Depending on the exact fence line location, entering into an agreement to maintain it could also constitute giving away airport property, which would be inconsistent with our federal grant assurances. Additionally, if we were to create an individual agreement for one property owner, it would set an expectation for all homeowners along the project area. The Airport cannot fund or maintain fencing outside of our property boundaries, nor can we enter into arrangements that imply long-term responsibility for infrastructure located on private property. For these reasons, we must proceed with the fence removal as planned.
